She left a big mark on my sister’s arm. When the police came we were told to delete the video which we did in front of them itself. Once the police left, she threatened us that if we ever mention this to someone, post about it on Instagram, or leave a bad review on Zomato, that they will take us to court. Can she do this? I only want to write an honest review on Zomato where I explain our situation and post the pictures of my sisters arm. Or can she make a case on us?

Q: I am a UK citizen, 46 years old, and I have been charged with theft, being drunk and assaulting a police officer. I was in a holding centre for 16 days and after seeing the prosecutor, he let me out whilst holding my passport for bail conditions. Can I expect a jail sentence or a fine?

Q: My husband is being held in custody on charges of indecent assault. The case has been under investigation for over 10 days now, the prosecutor has spoken to him once. They have rejected bail applications as well. How long can he continue? If the complainant clears the case (gives tanazul), can the prosecutor still punish him? (through penalty or anything else). Also, I am not able to know the reason for the bail rejection. Are they obliged to give a reason?

Q: Dear Sir/Madam, I sublet my apartment to a couple. When the building management said that it is not allowed, we asked them to vacate and gave the money back. They didn't vacate and were troubling us so badly for 14 days. I caught the man red-handed while using my things. I asked him to return them to me. He assaulted me and I have video recorded the same. Though I was assaulted, my injury was very small and the doctor mentioned it as a small injury in the government hospital report. I have filed a criminal assault case against him and gave the video as proof and my husband is the witness. The police opened the case and asked us to come after 3 days. 1. I want to know what will happen next in these 3 days. 2. Will they leave him just with a warning since my injury was small? 3. Will he be punished or put in jail? 4. How soon will they catch him since I know only his mobile number, name, and no other details and that's what I gave to the police as well? 5. Does the UAE have any website to see updates on police cases?

Q: Hi, Good morning! I have some questions. I have an ongoing assault case against a person. The person is out on bail and told the court that he would resolve the issue with me, but he hasn't. Question 1: Should I attend the hearing and inform the respected judge that my problem is unresolved, requesting a judgment? Question 2: How should I attend the hearing? Question 3: If a judgment is passed against the accused person, will he go to jail or will both of us be deported to our home countries?

Personal injury involves an injury sustained physically, emotionally and mentally. The injured person is entitled to claim damages where he has suffered an injury due to the other person’s wrongdoing. The victim may file a case against the person, who is found guilty in a criminal case or his insurance company if the defaulter has secured himself by insurance. The UAE civil law allows filing a compensation claim for injury damages.

In a criminal proceeding, the standard of proof to uphold a conviction is beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecution has the duty of establishing the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a criminal proceeding. This implies that the prosecution has to persuade the court that the evidence used in the trial cannot lead to any other plausible conclusion.

This Law promulgates the Federal Penal Code (Criminal Law) of the United Arab Emirates. Crimes and chastisement punishments shall be determined in accordance with the provisions of this Law and other penal codes.

The provisions of this Federal Decree-Law No. (31) of 2021 Promulgating the Crimes and Penalties Law, known as the "New UAE Penal Code", governs criminal actions in the United Arab Emirates. The New Penal Code repeals the previous UAE Penal Code (Federal Law No. (3) of 1987 Promulgating the Penal Code).
