Should health insurance for an Emirati employee cover her children or just her?

Hello,

Do we need to provide health insurance for our Emirati employee, who earns AED 4,000/month, and should it cover only her, or do we need to include coverage for her children as well?

She is married with six children, but we would like to ensure that the health insurance is for her only.

Thank you for your clarification!

Dear Questioner,

In the UAE, it is required for employers to provide health insurance for their employees as per the health insurance laws in various Emirates, such as in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

However, there are some important points to consider for your situation:

1. Health Insurance for Emirati Employees:

UAE Nationals (Emirati employees) are entitled to health insurance coverage under the law. The specific rules regarding the health insurance obligations for Emiratis vary depending on the Emirate.

In some Emirates like Dubai, there are requirements for employers to provide health insurance for all employees, including UAE nationals, whereas in others like Abu Dhabi, there might be specific public health coverage already provided by the government, which may reduce the burden on employers.

2. Coverage for Employee vs. Dependents:

- For the employee:

As per UAE law, you are typically required to cover the employee under the health insurance policy. However, the law does not mandate that the employer provide coverage for the employee’s dependents, such as children or spouse.

- For the dependents:

If you choose to cover the employee’s family (children and spouse), it’s typically voluntary and not a legal requirement.

Employers are not legally obligated to provide health insurance for the family members unless specified in the employment contract.

3. Employer's Responsibility:

Your responsibility as an employer is to ensure that the employee (Emirati) has health insurance coverage. You do not need to cover the spouse and children unless you voluntarily agree to do so or it is specified in the employment contract.

If you would like to cover just the employee, you may exclude the children and spouse from the policy.

4. Insurance Policy Terms:

The policy terms regarding who is covered should be clarified with the health insurance provider. Ensure that the policy you purchase is only for the employee if that is your preference.

5. In summary:

- You are required to provide health insurance for your Emirati employee.

- You are not legally required to provide health insurance for her children or spouse.

- You may opt to cover only the employee and exclude the dependents from the coverage, unless otherwise stated in the employment contract.

Please feel free to reach out if you need further clarification or assistance with the health insurance process for your employee.

Dear Client,

Thanks for your question! I hope you are doing well. I will assist you in this matter.

Yes, you are required to provide health insurance for your Emirati employee earning AED 4,000 per month.

While coverage for dependents, such as her six children, is not mandated by law, you may choose to extend it based on your company policy. Always check your specific health insurance plan and local regulations for the latest requirements.

Thanks & Regards,

According to UAE law, employers are required to provide health insurance for their Emirati employees. The insurance typically covers the employee only, but additional coverage for family members such as the spouse and children can be provided at the company's discretion.

In the UAE, health insurance is mandatory for employees as per local laws, whether they are citizens or expatriates.

The employer must provide health insurance for the employee that basically covers him.

In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the “Thiqa Program” is required for Emirati employees.
