What is a penalty for drinking and driving in Dubai?

What will be the penalty for drinking and driving in Dubai if caught by the police?

I am working in Dubai, and I want to know what would be the jail term if I don't pay the fine.

Is there any chance also of losing your job?

The Penal Code of the UAE penalizes the drinking and driving crime with a punishment of imprisonment, and/or a fine.

Through my experience, I have seen the fine penalty varying from anything between AED 5,000 and AED 50,000, depending on such accident conditions.

The other penalty of imprisonment can be anything between 1 and 3 months, in addition to the fine penalty.

In many cases, the judges decided only a fine without the imprisonment. It depends on a case by case basis.

There is quite a big chance of losing your job if this happens because the procedures can take up to 10 working days to finish.

In this case, the employer has the right to terminate the employee for two reasons as per Article 120 of the UAE Labor Law.

You better never do it. However, your motive should not be only your career or professional interest.

You should be taking care of your personal life and safety and more importantly other innocent people's lives driving or existing on the roads around you.

Hi Ahmed,

My friend has been caught and he didn't have an accident. They caught him directly.

Committing the act of drinking and driving in itself is a crime. Your friend doesn't need an accident to be caught. Random checking applies.

What is your question?

Just wanted to know whether we need to appoint a lawyer or will it work without appointing a lawyer.

Appointing a lawyer can guarantee the best results out of the case.

Which means, the probability of imprisonment penalty and a high fine will be much lower when your friend is represented by a legal professional with experience on what to be said and done during the course of the case till the verdict is issued.

Moreover, the lawyer will be able to appeal the verdict if it came too harsh, or even to request a fine reduction.

All this can be done through a lawyer who knows how to handle such cases.

Hi Ahmed,

I really appreciate your response to what I am asking. His verdict has been delivered, and it was a two-month jail term with AED 20000 fine.

Could you please let me know if there is any chance of reducing this?

I cannot really know whether there is a chance or not without seeing the relevant documents.

Ok, thanks a lot. Could you please let me know what are your fees if I consult you?

We charge between AED 500 and AED 1000 for such consultancy.

If we decide to take on the case we will be able to decide the fee after reviewing the documents.

His verdict is done. Two months jail term and AED 20000 fine.

He tried to escape when police asked him to stop. Is there any chance after the verdict will he can get a bail?

11 Oct 2017, 16:00

We need to review all the available documents to understand more.

11 Oct 2017, 16:04

Ok. One more query, can we visit the prisoners in jail in the UAE, and if yes, what's the procedure best time to visit?

11 Oct 2017, 16:06

You can check visiting applicability and time with the prison facility.
