Q: Hi, I have taken a loan from the bank worth AED 450000. I lost my job in 2016 and was unable to pay the instalments, then left Dubai. Bank people never contacted me and I left as I was unable to pay the monthly instalments. Now I am in India. I have got another job in Dubai and I am very keen on joining it. I contacted the bank through email asking their help to sort this, they asked me to call the call centre. When I called the call centre no one was able to help me, they just said "we will get back to you", but no reply yet. For 1 month, they are not able to help me. Now, I have to join my new job in Dubai asap, and unable to understand what to do. I am ready to pay half amount now and remaining half in instalments on monthly basis. But I don't know whom to contact and how to get this sorted. PS: I don't have any friend in Dubai who is ready to help me and go and negotiate with the bank on my behalf. I am just trying to call and sort on my own. Please help and guide me.

Before the case was registered by the bank, I had emailed them (also spoke with their rep) to give me a loan deferment, however, they chose not to respond. Please advise on the next possible actions. I still have not received any calls from any legal authorities. Will I have to face jail term or deportation?

Q: What would be the possible jail term for the non-payment of the police fine of AED 5,000 for a bounced cheque value of AED 95,000, if the person is entering the country? Also, will an existing bounced cheque case be de-criminalized with the onset of next year?

Q: Hi, My name is A. I was working in Dubai since 2013 and I lost my job in April 2019. I cancelled my residence visa and took a visit visa for one month. But due to some credit card case, I was not able to renew the visa and I overstayed 6 months. I had to exit the UAE on 26th November 2019 without a pass. Q: I lost my job in six months. I got a new job but with less and delayed salary. I have a bank loan and I didn't pay for it in 6 months and pay only partially if I have money. They deposited my cheque and I paid a penalty to the police station. Now, the bank called me again and informed me that they will register me for a civil case. Q: Hello, Is it possible to negotiate with the bank to consolidate my loan and credit cards balance when I'm outside the UAE? I have already resigned and relocated to another country. I've left a remaining loan balance of AED 170k + 2 credit cards balance (10K + 34K). My gratuity (33k) is being held by the bank and I missed this month's loan payment. I don't want to incur more interest by paying only the minimum on the 2 cards and wanted to negotiate with the bank to consolidate all debts into a single monthly payment. Right now I can only guarantee a 5K monthly payment. Please advise

The management of individual financial affairs is crucial and all the actions must be weighed down while committing to any financial liability. Whether it's job loss that may have lead to financial failure or the opposite, one must be aware of the personal liability which will not diminish by paying fines for cheque bounce cases. There are two major types of liabilities, criminal liability and civil liability. Each has its own significance, hence, must be dealt with accordingly.

The provisions of this law, promulgating UAE Civil Code, govern the civil transactions in the United Arab Emirates. The commercial transactions remain subject to the laws and regulations applicable in their regard.
