Company not renewing visa of an employee: What are the proper procedures?

A colleague of mine still has an unlimited contract with a private entity. The company has expressed its desire not to renew his visa.
They are asking him to resign because of this.

If either party wishes to not renew the contract, then the contract can be terminated and the employee must serve the notice period according to the contract.
