Should I pay the rent of a whole year if I was in lockdown in my country?

In March 2020, my tenancy contract was over but could not renew as I was stuck in India during the lockdown.

In Aug, when I returned, I couldn't pay rent and renew my contract so I left the flat in September, after which the real estate filed a case against me.

When I went to Tasheel, they said I have to pay full rent for a whole year as there is no option.

Please guide.

Negotiate with the other side to get a solution and try to ask them to reduce the amount to get settlement.
