The possibility of approaching the UAE courts to end a marriage made in the USA

Dears,

I’m Muslim (man) married to an American (Christian) in the US and our marriage was not as per the Sharia.

Now we want to divorce in the UAE, would the court accept that? as I wonder if it could be dismissed because my marriage may not be valid here even though it’s registered and she has been on my residency for the last 7 years.

For your information, we both have dual citizenship so we can’t apply other laws.

Thank you!

Your marriage is valid under Sharia law. A Muslim man can marry a Christian woman.

You can approach the court in the UAE for divorce. UAE courts have jurisdiction if you both are living in the UAE.

You need to approach the personal status court for proceeding. Your matter will be referred to the family guidance committee. They will try to reconciliate between both of you, if reconciliation doesn’t happen, then you will be allowed to submit your case in the family court.
