Questions & Answers
Are there any chances to get arrested in my home country for an unpaid loan in the UAE?
I took out a loan with [----] in the UAE in 2018 and made initial payments for about five months. Unfortunately, due to family issues, I had to return to Pakistan and have not been able to return since.
I have been unemployed, which has hindered my ability to make payments consistently. Although I have been making payments for the past three years, the high conversion rates have made it difficult to keep up with the amounts due.
I genuinely want to fulfill my obligations, but inflation has further complicated my financial situation. Additionally, transferring money from Pakistan to the UAE for deposits is also a challenge.
I have been consistently paying between AED 500 and 1000 for a long time; however, any delay or irregularity in my payments results in threats of police action against me.
My inquiry is whether there is a chance of being arrested in Pakistan, and what potential repercussions I might encounter if I cease making payments.
Dear Questioner,
Thank you for contacting us.
Regarding your concern about the loan from [----]:
If the case is only civil (non-criminal), you cannot be arrested in Pakistan. However, you may face issues re-entering the UAE if there is any court judgment or travel ban issued against you.
UAE banks cannot take criminal action against you in Pakistan, but they may assign collection agents locally or continue pursuing the matter through UAE courts.
If you stop payments completely, your liability will increase, and you may face legal consequences in the UAE.
We recommend that you settle the issue through negotiation or appoint a legal representative to check your file and assist with resolving the matter.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for reaching out. Regarding your loan with [----], please note the following:
You cannot be arrested in Pakistan solely for unpaid personal loan debts in the UAE, as these are generally considered civil matters and Pakistani authorities do not act on such foreign civil debts.
However, if you stop payments completely, the lender may take legal action against you in the UAE, which could lead to travel bans or arrest warrants within the UAE or other Gulf countries.
Collection agencies may contact you in Pakistan, but actual arrest or legal enforcement there is extremely unlikely for this type of debt.
It is important to communicate with your lender about your financial difficulties. They may offer restructuring options to make repayment more manageable.
We recommend consulting with us for personalized assistance regarding your case.
If you need help negotiating with the lender or legal support, our team is here to assist you. Please let us know if you would like to discuss further.
Best regards,
Failure to repay loans can lead to legal action within the UAE, including the possibility of being pursued if you are there.
However, UAE judgments cannot be directly enforced in Pakistan unless there are specific agreements between the two countries for the enforcement of such rulings.
Police threats usually don’t extend to other countries unless in specific cases.

Dear questioner
The chances are less likely to get arrested in Pakistan if the amount is not huge.
You will only face issues in the UAE if they initiate court procedures here in the UAE.
