Proforma invoice vs school fee invoice: Which one to pay?

Dear Sir/Madam,

The school where my children attend recently requested that I pay a proforma invoice for the entire year's school fees. However, the proforma invoice and the school fee invoice display two different amounts.

Is a proforma invoice a demand for payment? And am I legally obligated to pay a proforma invoice, or the school fees invoice?
