Is it possible to challenge an imprisonment judgment issued in absentia?
Hi there,
I used to live in Dubai till Jan 2015. However, I traveled overseas to get married but I had an accident due to which I was bedridden and now am in a wheelchair.
I can't work because of my health and also I suffer from anxiety and depression. I had a loan from a bank and the cheque was bounced for 89k and the Sharjah court gave a verdict of 6 months imprisonment in absentia. My question is:
Can this imprisonment be changed to a fine?

If the Sharjah imprisonment judgment was issued in your absence (from all hearings), then you have the legal right to challenge this judgment. We expect that the judgment would be easily changed into a fine.
