Precautions while spending vacation with pregnant girlfriend in the UAE

Hello Nikhat Sardar Khan,

I have a question related to pregnancy and marriage.

I plan to come to Dubai for some days on holiday. My girlfriend is pregnant (3 months) and we're not married.

What are the risks if a problem related to pregnancy happened and we wanted to see a doctor?

Thank you in advance,

Best regards

It is against the law to live together with someone you are not married.

The police may not verify each apartment complex or hotel, or knock on doors and verify marriage certificates, except Sharjah or Saudi Arabia, but, if someone complains, or if you are caught by the police for some other issue, then the police may be obliged to investigate.

The UAE hotels do not ask for a marriage certificate, (except Sharjah) thus, the hotels do not enforce the ‘only married couples’ rule.

Therefore, unmarried couples may not face trouble in booking a room. At the check-in, you may be required to show your passport.

Hugging, physical intimacy or kissing in public is prohibited and if caught for any misbehaviour at the hotel or outside especially if the general public objects to the affection displayed, then police investigation will follow, and if found that you are unmarried, you may be in for trouble.

Since your girlfriend is pregnant, maybe she will require the services of a hospital, she will be asked the name of the husband so she cannot introduce you as the boyfriend.

This will be for information Know Your Customer (KYC) purpose. But if she ends up in a medical emergency where police have to be involved, then it is trouble.

So to summarize, it is safe to come here for a vacation, but avoid affection in public and police trouble.
