Q: I have had a rented apartment in Dubai for more than 5 years. I CHOSE NOT to have a contract with Empower for A/C. Instead, I bought a portable a/c.
The Landlord AND Empower are now saying that I have been living illegally and that I MUST pay AED 11,000 and then REGISTER with Empower and pay the monthly charges even though I do not have or want Empower services.
Can this be so? Thank you, MJ.

Q: In September I moved from my apartment and as I have a contract with Etisalat I called them to ask if I can move my connection to other address. I have been told that this area is coved by Du so I have been suggested to close my account, which I did.
Now after such a long time, I have received an email from Etisalat that my account was overdue by almost 2k Dh. I directly contacted Etisalat, I have spoken with a few people there without any resolution. Also, I have emailed to their customer care centre but till now my complaint has not been resolved. All the supportive documents I have in hands.
Where do I stand from a legal perspective? What would you advise?

Consumer protection and the concept of "cooling period"
1
Q: Is there a law regarding a "cooling period" on an item purchased?
We had a problem with a company distributing vacuum cleaners in Sharjah, we have returned the item to them as we felt like being pressured to buy without giving us time to think before buying, and their contract states that I have to pay 4,000 Dirhams as a cancellation if I return the item within 3 days.
Is it legal? Where is the 3 day cooling period?

Increasing the price of restaurant's food items on third party platforms

2
Q: As a restaurant, we have the same price for our food items on dine-in, delivery menu, our website, and all other social media platforms like Google, FB...etc., wherever we are selling directly.
But when we are selling through a 3rd party platform, they charge a minimum 25% to 30% commission, and that is incurring losses. We want to keep our prices 20% higher on 3rd party platforms to pay for the margin.
Salespeople from these 3rd party platforms claim that it is not allowed by the UAE government under consumer protection law; Federal Law No. (24) of 2006 On Consumer Protection.
However, I read the law myself and it doesn't mention anywhere that a restaurant can't have a different price on their own website /dine-in menu via 3rd party platform.
A lot of other restaurants have different prices on their own website and a higher price on a 3rd party platform.
Can you please give us legal advice if we can have a 20% higher price on 3rd party online platforms?
Thanks!

What are the laws regarding chilled water supply in residential buildings?

1
Q: Hello,
What are the laws regarding chilled water supply in residential buildings and its effect on air conditioning output?
I recently bought an apartment, and despite servicing all the AC units, we cannot get temperatures lower than 25°C in the living area and 23°C in the bedrooms.
An independent AC company evaluated this and reported that the chilled water supply to my unit is 20°C, while it should be 7-8°C. What rights do I have in this situation before approaching building management?
I am paying for chiller services but not receiving the expected performance.
Thank you!

If someone has a case in the UAE, can they travel to another GCC country? 0
Hi.
One of my friends joined a Telegram group. They said, "We will transfer some amount to your account, and your task is to transfer this amount to another account. Once the task is completed, you will get 30 or 50 AED per task."
He completed 3 to 4 tasks, but he realized it was not good, so he stopped. After one week, when he opened his account, it was blocked, and the bank said, "We are conducting an investigation; after this, we will let you know."
After some days, he had an accident and went to his home country. He then received a call from a landline number, which was from the Abu Dhabi police station.
They said, "We have received a complaint against you; come to our investigation department." However, due to his surgery and treatment, he could not go.
After some time, his bank account was reopened, and he did not receive any further calls. I want to know, if he comes back to the UAE or goes to any other GCC country, will he face any problems?
If someone has a case in the UAE, can they travel to another GCC country?
Please advise!

I want to open an online shop. Do I need a license to open an Etsy shop? 0
I currently live in Sharjah and have a UAE residence visa but I am not a UAE or GCC national. I want to open an online shop (Etsy or Shopify) to sell handmade items, such as crocheted goods, bookmarks, greeting cards, etc.
Do I need a license to open an Etsy shop?
If so, which license do I need to sell my products online, including UAE and worldwide?
How much would it cost me?
Can I keep my residence visa (sponsored by my father) and not change it?

How can we locate a person with an ongoing legal case? 0
Hello,
I am seeking your legal advice regarding a friend who was previously imprisoned in Abu Dhabi. His case there is now closed, but he has another ongoing case in Dubai.
Currently, we have lost contact with him and are unsure of his whereabouts. How can we check where he is or access any other legal facility?
Are there legal procedures to locate a person with an ongoing case?
What steps should we take to get more information about his status and legal position?
