Leaving the country without settling debts

Hello Sir,

I would like to move to Qatar very soon, however, I have credit card debts in the UAE.

Please give an advice that I can move without settling credit card debts.

If so, will I be arrested in other GCC countries due to the non-settlement of debts in UAE?

Dear Sir/ Madam,

Thank you for reaching out to me on this.

You can leave the country as long as there are no cases registered against you.

However, I would not advise you to do so as the bank will bounce your security cheques (assuming you have issued to them) and register a police case in UAE.

As long as the criminal record stays on your name, you run a risk of arrest while travelling.

I would advise that you issue a power of attorney to a friend or a lawyer in the UAE so that when such police case is registered, your power of attorney holder can represent you before the police and pay a fine and clear the case.

Please note that payment of a fine is not the same as paying the outstanding amounts.

I trust you will find this helpful.

Hello Sir,

Thank you for your valuable advice.

I will ensure that no police case is registered before my travel.

However, my query was whether any chance by the court to arrest me in other GCC due to the non-settlement of credit card debts in the UAE banks.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

It has happened in the past that due to police cases, people have been arrested and even tried to be extradited.

Hence I would not suggest keeping the police cases open. As long as you have no criminal record, you will be fine.
