A woman wants to move out of abusive home. What are her legal options?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am an Arab expatriate woman living in the UAE, sponsored by my company on a work visa. I live with my oppressive family and I want to move out and live independently.

Can my father legally attempt to force me to come back? Does the law protect me from potential abuse from my parents following this decision?

Can they file a missing persons report, and what are the consequences of that? Can I file a restraining order, and does that guarantee they won't approach me?

I would really appreciate your help.

My living situation is unbearable and I need to leave this household for the sake of my mental and physical wellbeing.

Good day,

Hope all is well!

Yes, you have the right to live alone, that being said.

If they harassed you after leaving the household, you can always file a police report against them explaining to the officer what is happening and he will raise it to the public prosecutor who might take precautionary measures like a restraining order.

Thank you!

That is reassuring!

Are there any measures they can take under Sharia law to force me to come back?

How old are you?

I am 24.

You should be OK.

The legal guardianship ends at 21 completely, except for marriage, they will ask for your father, uncle, etc.

But still, there is a way around that.

If you need any legal work in the future, kindly WhatsApp me.

Take care!
