How to recover an amount lent to a relative who refuses to pay?

Dear sir/madam,

I live in the United States. I lent money to a relative who lives in Dubai 9 months ago on the condition that it will be repaid in 6 months.

He is not paying back the money now or committing to a date that he will repay. I had done a bank wire transfer and have proof of this. I don’t have any other legal documents except for WhatsApp audio messages that we exchanged.

What legal options do I have?

I have the outgoing wire transfer document from my bank in the US with the sender’s and receiver’s addresses and account numbers.

Perfect, but you mentioned that you have Whatsapp messages, right?

Yes, I do.

I have Whatsapp audio clips but they are not in English. They are in Malayalam.

I understand.

In general, you are still on the safe side as long as you have the receiver's details.

I do.

I have their residential address and bank info. If I were to proceed legally, what would be the first step?

And if we proceed legally, is it a barrier that I live in another country? Do I have a case here?

Thank you and appreciate your response!

The first step is to send a legal notice and give him a specific time for refunding your money.

Being aboard is not a problem, it is your right and you can make it by email as well as DHL or notary public by a lawyer.

You can not proceed in your country because the Dubai court is the competent court to view this case.

For further details, please contact me via WhatsApp.

Thanks!
