A colleague crashed my rented car, and they want me to pay for the damages. What now?
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hired a rental car, and it was involved in an accident. I'm a new license holder. However, the accident was caused by my colleague and was registered under his license, with an ARC report generated (minor scratches only).
Now, the rental car company is asking me to pay 10,000 DHS because I let someone else drive the car, saying the insurance won't cover this. But I don't have that kind of money.
What can be done in this situation?
Dear Questioner,
According to UAE law, the person who is responsible for the accident is liable for the damages and expenses incurred.
In this case, as the accident was caused by your colleague, he would be responsible for paying the damages and expenses.
However, if the rental car company has a clause in their rental agreement stating that only the person who rented the car can drive it, then they may hold you responsible for the damages.
In this case, you may need to consult with a lawyer to understand your rights and options.
If the rental car company is asking for an amount that you cannot afford, you can try negotiating with them for a lower amount or setting up a payment plan.
You can also try to reach a settlement with your colleague, where he agrees to pay for the damages.
If all else fails, you may need to seek legal advice and consider taking the matter to court. It is important to keep all communication and documentation related to the accident and the rental car agreement for evidence.
