Is there a timeframe for a refund after canceling the rental contract before moving in?
Q: Dear Questioner, I signed a rental contract. Two days later, my circumstances changed, requiring me to cancel the contract. This was still 15 days before the move-in date. I had not received the keys, and the flat was not yet ready. Unfortunately, the agent insisted that the first payment be made by direct transfer, not a cheque. Since I canceled, they have emailed to acknowledge the cancellation, but I haven`t heard anything since. There is a two-month penalty written into the contract, so I am waiting for the returned cheques and the rest of the rent (minus the two-month penalty) to be returned. Is there a mandatory timeframe for this to be completed? Three weeks have passed since their acknowledgment. Thanks in advance!

Q: Dear Lawyers, I have been a victim of a scam. I already have a court order confirming that I was scammed, and the court has issued a fine of 250,000 AED for the scammer. However, my lawyer told me that the amount will go to the government. When I asked how we would proceed to recover my money, they claimed it’s not possible and that this is as far as they will assist me, leaving me on my own moving forward.

Q: Good afternoon, I hold a valid UAE employee visa (issued in Dubai). I have not been to the UAE for over 6 months. I am currently attempting to cancel the visa through MOHRE, as the owner of the company has left the country and has not been responsive. Additionally, the trade license has expired. Can my employer demand repayment of salary after acknowledging an increase?
Q: Hello, I currently work for an American company based out of the US, but my contract is through a legal entity in the UAE. I received a salary increase last December. I had to sign a salary increase document. I have been getting paid that salary since. Now the company has a registered entity in the UAE. While they were reviewing the financials to transfer our contracts from the current local entity to the new one, HR claims they made a mistake, stating that I have been overpaid. They are asking me to revert to my previous salary and pay back the extra money I received. I have the signed contracts and the emails where they are admitting that error. Note that the new salary has been submitted to the involuntary loss of job insurance, and I have also applied for a bank loan using the new salary, providing certificates from my current local employer with that salary to secure the loan.
