Can I sue overseas app developers for misconduct and website deletion?
Hello,
I want to create a legal case against my mobile app developers who sabotaged my business and mobile apps, failed to deliver a good product, and, despite that, had the audacity to ask for a bonus.
When I refused, they deleted my websites twice (two different projects and sites, with months between each incident). I want to pursue legal action with someone experienced in technology-related cases. The developers are freelancers hired via an online marketplace for freelancers (Upwork).
Everything is legally documented, including WhatsApp messages clearly showing evidence of their sabotage, as well as some logs from GoDaddy related to the web and app development.
Thank you!
Hello,
This is a serious situation, and you absolutely have grounds to pursue a legal case against these mobile app developers in Dubai.
Their actions, as you described them, constitute significant breaches of contract and potentially cybercrimes.
We have experience in this kind of case.
Kindly share your WhatsApp number to discuss this further.
Dear Questioner,
Thank you for reaching out and for providing the detailed background regarding your situation.
Based on what you've described, you may indeed have strong legal grounds to take action against the developers under UAE law.
Their actions, including sabotage, deletion of websites, failure to deliver, and breach of trust, can potentially give rise to both criminal and civil claims.
Legal Avenues Available:
1. Criminal Complaint (Cybercrime):
Under Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumors and Cybercrimes, unauthorized access to and deliberate damage of electronic platforms (such as websites or mobile apps) is a serious criminal offense in the UAE.
If you have evidence of sabotage, such as logs from GoDaddy and incriminating WhatsApp messages, you may file a cybercrime complaint with the UAE authorities.
2. Civil Case for Damages:
In addition to the criminal element, you also have the option of pursuing a civil claim for breach of contract, poor performance, and damages caused to your business. The fact that the developers were hired through Upwork and that the agreements and communications are documented will support your case.
Next Steps:
We recommend the following approach:
- We will review all relevant documentation (Upwork contracts, messages, GoDaddy logs, etc.).
- Based on this, we can prepare and issue a formal legal notice to the developers.
- Simultaneously, we can begin the process of filing a cybercrime complaint with the authorities, as well as assess the viability of filing a civil lawsuit to recover any financial losses you’ve incurred.
Please share all available documentation at your earliest convenience, and we will proceed accordingly. We understand how disruptive this situation must be and will do our utmost to assist you swiftly and effectively.
Kind regards,
Mohammed Salah

Dear questioner,
The developers failed to deliver a functional product, which violates the terms of your contract (presumably established through Upwork).
This includes the app's poor quality and the failure to deliver a "good product." The developers may have acted negligently in their duties, leading to the app's poor performance.
If they held themselves out as experts, this could rise to professional negligence. We can file a complaint with the Cybercrime Department as well.
If you need our assistance, kindly share your WhatsApp number.
Dear Client,
Thank you for reaching out and providing detailed information about your situation.
Given the circumstances you described-including documented evidence of sabotage, breach of contract, and deletion of your websites by the developers have valid grounds to pursue legal action.
Your records of communication (via WhatsApp), platform documentation from Upwork, and technical logs from GoDaddy will be essential in building a strong case.
Recommended Steps:
1. Upwork Dispute Resolution:
As the developers were contracted via Upwork, we recommend first initiating a formal dispute through Upwork’s resolution process. This will ensure you exhaust all available remedies on the platform and create an official record of your complaint.
2. Legal Action:
If the Upwork process does not result in a satisfactory outcome, you may consider pursuing a civil case for breach of contract, negligence, and damages resulting from the developers’ actions. The evidence you have collected will be crucial in supporting your claims.
3. Evidence Preservation:
Please ensure that all relevant communications, contracts, and technical logs are securely saved and backed up, as these will be needed for any legal proceedings.
