Is my ex-employer required to pay for my air ticket after I resigned to get another job?

Hi,

I resigned from my hotel after 22 months of service, hoping to get another job. It's been 2 months, and I haven't found one yet.

Is my previous employer obligated to pay for my air ticket?

Dear Questioner,

Article 13 of the Labor Law stipulates the following (about the employer):

Bear the costs of repatriating the Worker to his homeland or to any other place the parties have agreed on unless the Worker has joined another Employer or unless the termination of the Employment Contract was due to a reason attributable to the Worker, in which case the latter shall bear such costs.

Whether your previous employer is entitled to pay for your air ticket depends on:

- The specifics outlined in your employment contract.

- The company’s internal policies regarding resignations and reimbursements.

- Local labor laws governing such matters.

- The context of your resignation.

So based on these considerations, it is unlikely that your previous employer is legally obligated to pay for your air ticket unless explicitly stated in a contract or company policy.

Dear Questioner,

Under UAE labor law, an employer is not typically required to pay for an air ticket if you resign voluntarily unless it is specified in your contract or company policy.

Review your contract, check company policies, and consider negotiating with your former employer.

For further assistance, kindly share your WhatsApp number.

Dear Sir,

If you have already received your end-of-service benefits and signed the necessary documents, you may not have the right to claim the air ticket.

However, you can kindly request it from your previous employer on a friendly basis, and it will depend on their approval.

Best Regards,

Dear Inquirer,

In the UAE, whether your previous employer is obligated to pay for your air ticket depends on the terms of your employment contract and the specific circumstances of your resignation.

Here are key points:

- Employment Contract:

Review your employment contract to see if there is a clause regarding repatriation or air ticket expenses. Some contracts include provisions for return tickets.

- End of Service Benefits:

Generally, if you resign before completing a specified contract period, the employer is not obligated to pay for a return ticket unless specified in the contract.

- Company Policy:

Some companies may offer return tickets as part of their policy or goodwill, but this is not a legal requirement unless stated in the contract. It is best to have a lawyer present to prevent any risks that may occur.
