Am I legally responsible for preparing insurance-related reports as a nurse?

Dear Lawyers,

I hope all is well!

I work as a staff nurse at a hospital in Dubai. My main duties involve assisting patients based on their medical needs within my scope.

I also prepare medical reports for insurance approvals, which are signed by the doctor. However, I’m concerned whether preparing these medical reports falls within my responsibilities under UAE law.

I’m worried that if I make an error in the report, it could lead to significant problems.

If it does not come under your work, then you should not make it.

Dear Questioner,

Preparing medical reports as a nurse can be part of your duties if done under appropriate supervision and collaboration with physicians.

However, it is crucial to ensure that these activities align with UAE laws governing nursing practice to avoid potential legal issues arising from inaccuracies in documentation.

Always prioritize clear communication with your healthcare team to safeguard against errors.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns!

As a nurse, your primary role is indeed to provide patient care within your professional scope.

However, the preparation of medical reports, especially those intended for insurance approvals, is a critical task that generally requires careful attention to detail and a clear understanding of medical and legal responsibilities.

Under UAE law, the responsibilities of healthcare professionals are clearly defined, and it is crucial to ensure that you are operating within the legal boundaries of your role.

Errors in medical reports can indeed have serious implications, both legally and professionally.

I would be happy to discuss your specific situation in more detail and provide you with tailored advice on how to protect yourself and ensure that you are complying with your legal obligations.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly via WhatsApp or phone at [--------], or email me at [------], so we can arrange a time to discuss this further.

Best Regards,

Suhail Rana

Review the hospital's policy and the duties imposed on nurses.

General laws do not regulate this matter.

It is governed by the hospital's policy.
