Can you give us brief information regarding the new UAE law on abortion?
Dear Sir/Madam,
Can you give us brief information regarding the new UAE law on abortion?
When will it be effective?
Dear Questioner,
The new UAE law on abortion is already in effect, as of June 20, 2024. It represents a significant change as it allows for abortions in more situations than before. Here's a quick rundown:
- It permits abortions in cases of rape and incest within the first 120 days (around 17 weeks) of pregnancy.
- Abortions are still legal when the mother's life is at risk or the fetus has severe malformations.
- A medical board's approval is required for cases involving fetal abnormalities.
This reform makes UAE's abortion regulations more liberal than some US states. It's important to note that a woman's consent is prioritized, but if she's unable to give consent, her husband or guardian might be required to do so.

Hi,
This law allows for abortion in certain circumstances, such as in cases of rape, fetal abnormalities, or if the mother's health is at risk.
It also requires the consent of the pregnant woman and her husband, if married. The law also states that abortion must be performed by a licensed medical professional in a licensed medical facility.
It is important to note that abortion is still considered a criminal offense in the UAE, except in the circumstances mentioned above.
Hello,
The new UAE law on abortion, which was approved by the UAE Cabinet in November 2020, states that abortion is only permitted in certain circumstances, such as when the mother's life is at risk or if the fetus has a severe genetic disorder that is not compatible with life.
The law also requires counseling for women seeking an abortion and sets guidelines for medical professionals performing the procedure.
The implementation of the law will help to regulate and standardize abortion procedures in the UAE, while also ensuring that the rights and safety of women are protected.
Hello,
It is a decision, not a law. The decision is effective from the day following its issuance, which was on June 14.
The decision added three cases for abortion (in addition to the previous cases of abortion due to medical reasons), which are: pregnancy resulting from rape, pregnancy resulting from incest, and the agreement of the spouses to abort, after the committee's approval.
This committee consists of government members including doctors and judges.
Abortion is only allowed during the first four months.
